The 140 paintings on display in this exhibit arrived from all over the world and aim to reconstruct the interwoven fabric of the Eternal City in which Caravaggio lived and worked. The first years of the 17th century marked a taut and direct confrontation between two giants of Italian painting: Bologna’s Annibale Carracci – the undisputed leader of the Classicist movement – and Lombardy’s Caravaggio, the creator of a revolutionary form of representing reality. The works chosen for the exposition were selected in such a way as to portray the landscape of intricate events of the artistic atmosphere in Rome during the early 17th century in the broadest and most significant manner possible.
