ANCIENT GOLD JEWELLERY FROM ROMANIA: Before and after Trajan

December 14th, 2010 by admin

The fascinating Trajan’s Market will be hosting an extraordinary exhibit that displays a substantial amount of ancient Romanian treasures – for the first time in Italy.
The exposition will feature 140 pieces that come from the Gold Room of the National Museum of History in Bucharest, for the most part. These finds cover an extended period of time: from the Bronze Age (17th century B.C.) to the Byzantine Era (5th-6th century A.D.) and were used for a great variety of purposes. One of the special features of this exhibit is the collection of 20 of the many gold staters found in the capital city of Dacia with King Koson’s name engraved in Greek letters. These coins dating back to the 1st century B.C. are the only instance in the entire Dacian coin production that feature the name of the issuing authority on them.
