GUTTUSO 1912 – 2012

The centennial of the birth of the great Sicilian painter is being celebrated in the halls of the Vittoriano Complex. Guttuso lived in Rome for over 50 years and the capital city became the junction for his relationships with writers such as Moravia, sculptors like Moore and Manzù, poets like Pasolini and Neruda and directors like Visconti. One hundred works will be on display: paintings, drawings, sketches and drafts have been selected to represent the Sicilian master’s entire artistic career. These works document Guttuso’s various phases of expression and make up the first large anthology this city has ever dedicated to him. The pieces chosen for the exhibition are on loan from the most prestigious museums in Italy and abroad as well as from the most representative private collections.

JACOVITTI 1939-1997

Jacovitti, one of Italy’s most prominent illustrators, lived through sixty years of the country’s history with brilliant irony. He was one of the most significant and emblematic reference points for generations of comics aficionados. The exhibit traces the artist’s entire career until his death in 1997. More than 300 original panels and silhouettes of the artist’s characters will be displayed. Almost every drawing on exhibit are originals: from Jacovitti’s illustrations for Pinocchio, those he created for the Diari Vitt school diary series and his large panoramic panels for Italian newspaper “Il Giorno” during the 1950’s to his erotic drawings, political posters and vignettes.

VERMEER. The golden century of Dutch art.

Rome had been waiting a long time for an artistic event of this importance: an exhibit dedicated to Johannes Vermeer, the great Dutch painter of the 17th century whose art is not represented in any Italian collections. Aside from famous and enchanting Vermeer masterpieces such as The Little Street (in Amsterdam at the moment), this exhibit will also feature works by Carel Fabritius, Pieter de Hooch and Emmanuel de Witte along with works by artists who were well-known in their day who perhaps are no longer remembered such as Gerard ter Borch, Gerrit Dou, Nicolaes Maes, Gabriël Metsu, Frans van Mieris, Jacob Ochtervelt, Jan Steen and many other sophisticated and outstanding masters. Until now, there has been no exhaustive exposition of that fortunate period in art history due to the extreme difficulties that come with obtaining such rare and precious works. These masterpieces are very fragile and are jealously guarded by a few exclusive museums or sophisticated collectors. Today, the Scuderie del Quirinale is proud to be able to offer its guests such an extraordinary exhibit and a catalogue designed to help them understand and become familiar with Dutch painting and its undisputed and absolute master, Vermeer.

TRAVELLING THE SILK ROAD. Ancient Pathway between the Orient and the West

This exhibition was organised in collaboration with New York’s American Museum of Natural History. It traces the long voyage from the Orient to the West between 600-1300 A.D., presenting the multitude of cultures that roused the Silk Road through the reconstruction of four representative cities: Chang’an (today known as Xi’an), the cosmopolitan capital of the Chinese Tang dynasty; Turfen, a city-oasis in the Gobi Desert; Samarkand, a large trading outpost and cultural centre; and Baghdad, the capital of the Islamic world and Caliphate. A special section created exclusively for the Italian exhibit takes an in-depth look at the relationship between several Italian cities and the Far East during the final centuries of the Middle Ages.

URBAN ARENA MACRO

This year the Macro Museum is opening its doors to several exponents of Street Art, one of the most dynamic movements in recent years. These artists will take turns at trying their hand at creating their art on the various walls and surfaces of a terrace measuring 2,500 square metres. The featured artists of the first appointment are Bros, Sten & Lex and Ozmo. Sten & Lex worked on one of the museum’s enormous outer walls using a technique they invented called “stencil poster”. Bros created a piece called “Andrea”, a large-scale, intricate collage of coloured translucent film depicting a hurricane that was set off by a satellite. Ozmo will create a 20-metre tall work on one of the walls of Rome’s Macro museum’s terrace.
