PAUL KLEE AND ITALY

The GNAM National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art announces a large-scale exhibit dedicated to the relationship Paul Klee (1879-1940) had with Italy. The show features over 100 works by Klee and other Italian and non-Italian artists such as Kandinsky, Moholy Nagy, Max Bill, Albers, Licini, Soldati, Perilli, and Novelli etc. The Paul Klee and Italy exhibition analyses the influence that Italian culture and landscapes had upon the artist’s work in reference to the various phases of his artistic biography from the beginning of the Bauhaus period to his final solitary years in Bern.

CANOVA. THE SIGN OF THE GLORY

The Museo di Roma at Palazzo Braschi is hosting an exhibit until 7 April dedicated to the great Canova. Works chosen for the show make up the world’s largest collection: 79 sketches accompanied by 15 etches, 6 original plaster models, 4 temperas, an oil painting, two terra cottas and two marbles that allow visitors to visualize all stages of a work of art, from its conception to its realization. This exhibit takes on the study of Canova’s design from two points of view: a stylistic one (illustrating its characteristics and how it relates to that of his contemporaries) and one exploring the initial concept of a work.

ROBERT DOISNEAU. Paris en liberté.

The halls of Rome’s Palazzo delle Esposizioni will host over 200 original photographs taken by Doisneau in the City of Lights between 1934 and 1991, grouped together by themes. The exhibition leads the spectator through an exciting journey into the gardens of Paris, along the Seine and through the streets of the city and suburbs to then take them to Parisian bistros, fashion houses and art galleries. Doisneau was the author of a great number of photographic works, most of which were taken in Paris. He was also to become France’s most illustrious exponent of “humanist” photography. His pictures are now found in some of the greatest collections in France, the United States and Great Britain. They are also exhibited throughout the world.

GABRIELS AND THE ITALIAN CUTE NYMPHET

The Museo Canonica is offering a never-before-seen exhibition that compares works by Italian sculptor Gabriels (Paolo Gabrielli) to some of those by Pietro Canonica. These two marvellous artists will be displayed face-to-face for a “reflection” upon the images linked to the pathos of the Nymphet and its gradual decline and decay in today’s world followed by its current incarnation as the modern Cute Nymphet toy (Etant Dunny). Works by Gabriels are reconnected to the “cute” dimension of Takashi Murakami and Yoshitomo Nara as well as to American Pop Surrealism and Japanese Superflat, although these reconfirm a truly European cultural tradition.
