Still life paintings and sculptures are on display at Rome’s National Gallery of Modern Art (Galleria Nazionale D’Arte Moderna  – Gnam). The exhibit develops through three halls in which the works are accompanied by Haiku poetry in honour of Japanese culture. The visitor, like the still life, is called upon a closer analysis and an introspection that offers a different and extremely personal meaning to each work. The result being an interpretation of what is seen through the eyes of the soul. The selected pieces are lesser known works – those that the public would never see along the usual museum corridors. Louise Berliawsky Nevelson was an American sculptress of Russian origin who holds a prominent place in the realm of 20^th century avant-garde sculpture along with Duchamp, Picasso and Schwitters. Over 70 works of this magnificent artist will be on display: from her sketches and works in pottery dating back to the 1930’s and the assemblage in painted wood from the 1950’s to the masterpieces produced in the 1960’s -70’s up to her most mature, defining works created in the 1980’s. These works arrive on loan from the most important national and international collections. This exhibition is promoted by the Fondazione Roma and presented by the Fondazione Roma-Arte-Musei with Arthemisia Group – in collaboration with the Nevelson Foundation in Philadelphia and Milan’s Fondazione Marconi.

The Reverse Grand Tour is an ambitious project realised by Italian artist Valerio Rocco Orlando over a period of a year thanks to an itinerant residence in some of Rome’s most prestigious foreign academies. In this exclusive preview, the artist is revealing the results of his research: a video-installation with portraits of artists from abroad who offer their personal viewpoints first-hand just like a chorus of conversations (Each artist speaks in his or her native tongue; the clip is sub-titled) and a series of photographs with views of studio interiors in which the concept of “room with a view” is completely reversed. The choice of curators Ludovico Pratesi and Angelandreina Rorro is of presenting the work of a new generation artist in relation to several historical works from the National Gallery of Modern Art collection linked to the Grand Tour as well as self-portraits and portraits by 19^th and 20^th century artists.

The Palazzo delle Esposizioni is dedicating its halls to the great photographer Helmut Newton. The exhibition focuses upon the artist’s first three books published in the late 1970’s. The 200 shots on display could be interpreted as his self-portrait. His first book, “White Women” brought the nude to Fashion, illustrating the change in the perception of the woman in western society. In “Sleepless Night” and “Big Nudes”, the set vanishes and the models take the streets. It is not Fashion that makes news but news that becomes the Fashion. The photographs have been selected and reprinted under the supervision of his wife June, with the intention of telling of the man behind and beyond the lens and his vision of the feminine universe – as well as its evolution.
