The Carlo Bilotti Museum in Rome is paying tribute to this great artist, focusing substantial attention on his activity as collector.  The exhibit traces the history of the second half of the 20^th century surrounding Afonso who was friend and colleague to such artists as Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, Candido Portinari, Giorgio de Chirico, Max Jacob and Fernand Legér. The works chosen for the expo are linked to the Baroque-style atmosphere of the city and metaphysical expression with the intention of illustrating the influence of De Chirico on the artist’s idiom. A second Italian exhibition will follow in Venice for the occasion of the Architecture Biennale that will place emphasis on Nadir Afonso as architect and artist along with his collaboration with two great architects: Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer.

Approximately 300 pieces will be on display at Curia Iulia in the Roman Forum until 16 September. The exhibition features precious ceramics, jewels and mosaics that narrate the period of maximum splendour – beginning with the second century B.C. – of glassworks in the Roman world. The expo is presented in chronological order and traces all techniques adopted in the art of working glass. The most substantial portion illustrates glass production during the Roman Empire and is characterized by the luxurious works created for that society’s élite such as the splendid blue tray engraved with  bacchic figures from Albenga. The versatility of glass allows for the creation of the many gems and jewels on display. The exhibit closes with the imperial insignia of Emperor Maxentius found along the slopes of the Palatine Hill.

This year, Rome’s Palazzo Incontro has set up its splendid halls to host an extremely fascinating exhibit dedicated to Guido Crepax’s famous heroine: Valentina. This comic series heroine was considered a novelty on the cultural panorama of the 1960’s and 1970’s because her character was extremely erotic and sensual. These aspects incarnated many of the pulsations of emancipation and women’s independence of those times and were emphasized by the character’s natural and constant ageing. The exhibit unwinds among never before seen worktables and storyboards, sets, outlines and settings originating from the comic strip – not to mention videos like the Homage to actress Louise Brooks, who was Crepax’s inspiration to create Valentina.
